Treats for Caged Birds - Snacks, toys and lifestyle
Mention ‘bird treats’ to owners of caged birds and most often it’s species-appropriate tasty morsels like banana chips, peanuts in the shell, mealworms, biscuit softfood and of course, millet or sorghum sprays that spring to mind. We have no doubt that your birds will enjoy some delicious new snacks to try - see the full range of bird treats here.
Sometimes however, it’s worth thinking about other types of 'treats' that might benefit the birds in your care - for example, a truly ‘deep-clean’ of the cage and accessories; a carefully considered rearrangement of their favourite toys; or several new perches of different thicknesses and finishes to help keep their feet healthy and flexible.

One of the most effective ways to identify ways to improve your bird’s quality of life is to quietly observe your bird at different times of the day. You may notice for instance, that it retreats from certain types of noise, or prefers to explore rather than interact at particular times of the day, or that the position of their cage does not allow for seasonal changes in light and warmth.
You can make a big difference to your birds’ health and wellbeing by making small changes based on your careful observation. Aside from the enjoyment they get from new toys and snack delights, the best treat you can give your birds is to be an observant bird lover!
Treats for Garden Birds - A focus on energy
As mornings and evenings become cooler, small birds will visit your garden to hunt for energy-rich seed and insects. Offering a healthy treat of Millet Sprays or Wild Bird Energy Logs is a win-win situation; they get a nutritious snack and you get the opportunity to enjoy the antics of silvereyes, yellowhammers, sparrows, thrushes and blackbirds as they feed.
High quality vegetable fat, wheat flour, and natural flavourings ensure that Wild Bird Energy Logs will provide an immediate source of energy for garden birds. Hang these no-melt treats from a high branch or feeder with some shade for bird comfort. The 6-packs of smooth-finish logs are clean to handle and come in plant-based, home-compostable packaging.
Another popular option is the ready-to-hang Wild Bird Hanging Gourmet Treat, designed to meet the nutritional needs of an even wider variety of garden birds. Crammed with mix of delectable fruit and seeds, the Hanging Treat is a fuss-free way to attract silvereye, sparrow, finch, thrush, rosella, pigeon and blackbird. Simply hang this NZ-made treat out of predator reach and sit back to enjoy the show!
Most of our native birds are not seed-eaters but they do appreciate treats of halved fruit or hard-boiled egg set atop a stand-alone pole and out of reach of predators. Our nectar loving species, such as tūī, korimako (bellbird), and tauhou (silvereye) will happily line up at any bee-friendly Nectar Feeder, where they will delight you with unique insights into their behaviour.
